Frequently asked questions
What types of insurance do I need as an expat in France?
When moving to France, most expats need a mix of health insurance (both public coverage via the Carte Vitale and supplemental “mutuelle”), car insurance if you drive, and often home or renters’ insurance. We help you understand your options and choose plans that meet French regulations while covering your unique needs.
How do I register for French public healthcare and obtain a Carte Vitale?
After you’ve secured residency, you’ll need to enroll with the Assurance Maladie (CPAM). Once registered, you receive a French social security number and then a Carte Vitale, which gives you access to France’s state healthcare system. However, many expats choose to add private insurance (mutuelle) to cover costs not reimbursed by the state and add a few perks (automatic refund of the claims, avoid paying some upfront costs, etc.).
Do I need private health insurance if I’m already covered by the public system?
Yes, while France's public healthcare system provides universal coverage for all citizens, patients are typically responsible for at least 30% of their medical expenses (often more when going private). Private health insurance, known as a "mutuelle", helps cover these additional costs. The mutuelle also enables the "100% Santé" initiative, fully implemented in 2021, which ensures that services in audiology, optometry, and dentistry are entirely covered, offering free options for hearing aids, glasses, and dental care. Our service assesses your needs and provides guidance on selecting the best mutuelle plan for expats.
Do we need a French bank account to pay my insurance premiums?
French insurers, like many service providers in France, often prefer direct debits for premium payments, and it's frequently the only available option. While having a French bank account is not strictly necessary—any account within the EU/SEPA zone is typically acceptable—we often recommend starting with an online bank, as it's typically easier to start with (to name a few: Revolut, Wise, N26, etc.). We even have partners who can assist you with this process, so don't hesitate to reach out if you need guidance. That being said, obtaining a French insurance policy without a French bank account is possible but might limit your options or increase your premium although we can help no matter your situation.
Can I get insurance coverage if I don’t speak French fluently?
Absolutely. Some French insurance companies offer support in English and have online tools to simplify policy details. We partner with providers that ensure language isn’t a barrier, making it easier for expats to understand and manage their policies.
What happens if I miss a payment or need to make a claim?
Our support team guides you through the claim process, ensuring that you have all the necessary documentation. We also explain what steps to take if a payment is missed, helping you avoid any disruptions in your coverage.
How do I compare different insurance plans to find the best one for me?
We offer detailed comparisons of insurance policies tailored for expats, highlighting differences in coverage, premiums, and benefits. Our online tools and expert advice help you make an informed decision so that you’re well-protected in France.
